A deluxe hardcover bilingual edition of Struwwelpeter with the original pictures (their colors tidied up) and the German verses with new, closer English translations side by side. The translations concentrate on copying the easy rhythm and rhyming and natural language of Hoffmann's lines. They try to follow the originals word by word, line by line, picture by picture, as closely as possible, right up to the end of each story.A few sequels are then added Conrad is taken to hospital and his thumbs are reattached. Flying Robert is found next morning clinging to a steeple, and is rescued.

A page at the end describes the making of "suncatchers" - stained glass window hangings - in the shape of Struwwelpeter figures, and a stained glass Peter is shown on the back cover.

Der Struwwelpeter was written in December 1844 by Frankfurt am Main physician Heinrich Hoffmann as a Christmas gift for his three-year-old son Carl Pilipp. He put it together very quickly from funny stories that he used in his practice. He told these to frightened child patients, making pencil sketches to illustrate, and the children quickly forgot their fears and could be examined. It is sometimes theorized that the stories are too frightening for children, but Hoffmann knew better - from practice.

The book was published in October 1845 and was an immediate and perennial success. Edition after edition quickly followed - nearly 200 in Hoffmann's lifetime. Today, Struwwelpeter scholars have given up trying to count the editions and imitations and parodies and translations that are still appearing. An internet search for "Struwwelpeter" returns over 400,000 results.

The Struwwelpeter Museum is at 20 Schubertstrasse in Frankfurt, a short walk from the Palmengarten entrance. Helping to support the museum is its "Freundeskreis" (Circle of Friends). Membership - see the Museum website - is US$30 per year and is open to all. It includes a subscription to their annual Struwwelpost - a journal of Struwwelpeter news and scholarly articles.

This is not a very good translation, and the additional stories that take the morbid endings and try to make them better for more modern, wimpy kids, are pointless. The Mark Twain translation of the stories is far more accurate, and in the correct poetic meter. Some of the rhymes in this version are tortured, or try to tell a story that is different from the original. I really should have thought more about an antique hardcover of it.

Struwwelpeter 2000 English and German Edition Heinrich Hoffmann Colin Blyth Georgina Blyth Roche Valerie Blyth 9780964180451 Books Reviews

The orignal German stories and accompanying drawings are great.

This edition includes, in addition to the English translation, several verses written by the translator to give the stories a more "Hollywood" ending. The original stories are *dated* and don't always end so happily for the characters in them. To add more lines and verse that "fix" these endings and makes them more acceptable or PC strikes me as a strange and inappropriate choice. I also question some of the translators' direct word choices and would prefer to see footnotes with several options when translating colloquialisms or unique words.
Excellent version that has both English and German side by side. (But, buyer beware -- this is an old text that is racist, sexist, and just somewhat brutal in general.) If you know what you're getting, then this is a faithful rendition.
Here's the juice the edition sold here reflects so strongly the feel of revision that it stinks of sanitized, colorless and drained American fluff. This is a genuine problem in a book seemingly steeped in Germanic tradition and nostalgic properties. I mean, c'mon. Space aliens?? Give me a break. It isn't what I had hoped for at all, really--and the shame of it is, the original book was very much what I'd hoped for. It's a shame folks have to meddle with a good thing. So, you are asking, why did I give the book three stars? Well, even mottled German kiddie tales are better than anything you'll find in the US market, so I guess half an egg is better than none at all. A last word on value I know these reviews should pertain to the item and not the price paid for, but I felt like a real jackass when I paid 19.95 for this obviously independently pressed "hardcover" (no dust jacket), only to discover that the back of the book clearly shows a cover price of 14.95 in US dollars. So thanks for the sour persimmons, cousin. If five bucks makes no how-d'ya-do to you, then fear not on that score--but I felt a little bit snookered.
and now because I am so kind, they are a part of my godkids' lives too. Whaaahahaha Let's just see if the little one insists on sucking her thumb after these bedtime stories.

They are strange and severe and beautifully drawn, and did convince me to stop playing with matches when I was six or seven. I couldn't bear the thought of my cat crying over a pile of my cremated ashes.

Every German child grows up with these tales. It's wasn't until my 20s that I started to step back and realize how crazy these are. Well, Germany is the only country that has done well for the past 15 years, so I guess the Germans do some things right.
I wanted to buy a hardcover copy of Struwwelpeter with the original illustrations and the words I knew from my childhood. I got all but the words. I had seen that there were new English translations but didn't think they would vary greatly from the old ones. Sadly the language is modern colloquial which doesn't go with the pictures and some of the names have been changed, which is irritating. What is worse, some of the poems have been sanitised---not the spirit of Struwwelpeter at all, where each naughty child suffers a painful end.For example, Conrad's thumbs are not left on the floor but packed in ice and sewn on in the hospital by the wonders of modern surgery.I could have wept as I had bought 2 copies for my great-grandchildren.
This book was read to me as a child. These twisted Aesop's Fables teach the important lessons in life, in a realistic way. If you're looking for fairy godmothers, magic apples and first love's kiss-skip this book. The basic underlying lesson in each of these stories is 'there are consequences to your actions'. A good lesson for kids-and lets face it, many adults. This book scared the Bejesus out of me when I was a kid, but I NEVER played with matches...again. My favorite story in this book is the story of the boy that is mean to his pets..... There are also stories that are not as heavy, but good lessons like 'you have to watch where you're going' literally and metophoricaly, be kind, listen to your parents. The importance of being well groomed and clean (see cover illustration). I grew up reading the German, but this book has English translation on the opposite page, and they did a pretty good job of the translation, while keeping it rhymey. This is a good book for a parent to share with their child about some really important things, naturally you could skip the stories you think would be too scary or age inappropriate. I have to add the illustrations a just terrific, very colorful and tell the story on their own. If fact you could just show the pictures and tell the story in your own words. Depending on the maturity of your child. I think this would be appropriate for kids and parents 5 and up.
Would have been better if the English portion was a strict translation of the German, but this book is made for safe spaces. The English portion adds to or changes the German stories to make them less horrifying... the horrific stories are what I grew up with and wanted those stories. Had the product description mentioned that the English parts would be changed. I wouldn’t have purchased it.
This is not a very good translation, and the additional stories that take the morbid endings and try to make them better for more modern, wimpy kids, are pointless. The Mark Twain translation of the stories is far more accurate, and in the correct poetic meter.
