The World Greatest Speakers Insider Secrets on How to Engage and Move Your Audience to Action Maria Lynn Johnson 9781944335779 Books Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Maria's book. The way it was written allowed me to learn from the best of the best in "bite-sized pieces". This just-in-time way of learning made the various speakers' lessons stick more solidly in my head. With all of the rushing and information overload in today's business world, I appreciated Maria's style of writing. I often refer back to her book as I prepare for various presentations! Maria is a true expert in the field of speaking professionally and I'd recommend checking her book out, along with her consulting practice!
I always thought that public speaking simply meant communicating information clearly in a style that engaged the listener. I see now that public speaking is much more than that. The speakers featured in these interviews have an incredible ability to not only engage their audience but also to move them and to literally change their lives with their messages. This book showed me just how powerful public speaking can be.
My goal as a speaker is not to do it professionally. I just want to be a more effective classroom and seminar instructor. But the book gave me much more confidence in my ability to become a better speaker. I learned to stop pretending to do what a good speaker does and just be myself. I learned how to effectively engage your audience with stories. I also learned some basic techniques, like how to memorize your speech, how to channel your nerves into positive energy, how to open your speech, and how close it with a professional pitch for your product or service.
I found the speakers' stories about how they got started interesting because none of them said public speaking was a skill they were born with, and few discovered their interest in speaking early on. Their stories about the worst things that ever happened to them on stage were horrifying but at the same time reassuring because they all survived and went on to speak again -- sometimes with the same clients.
This book actually made me want to be a better communicator.
First off, I am very impressed by the organization and structure of this book. It's like having 20 different mini-coaching sessions with some truly fantastic communicators and presenters. One thing that I really liked about it was seeing that each individual featured in the book had their own unique perspective about speaking. It was easy to find many that I naturally connected with since I recognized either myself or an experience I've had in the anecdotes that were included.
Another very helpful component is that at the end of each speaker's chapter, Ms. Johnson includes a summary of some of the key points brought up by each interviewee. While these are definitely not a substitute for reading the chapters, I am certain that when I write my next presentation, I will look at those summaries to help remind me about important things to keep in mind!
I suppose it should have been obvious, but I was also struck by how these speakers all commented that they had to learn their craft, and that for many of them, speaking was not necessarily the path they would have chosen for themselves. I'm sure that many people tend to think of public speaking as falling into the realm of those who feel like "naturals" on stage, and it was great to read the success stories of some people who don't perceive themselves that way. Throughout the interviews, each speaker shared what mindset shifts helped them become better communicators, and that actually made me feel better about my own speaking skill set and how I could improve it since I do not view myself as naturally inclined in this area. Reading each of the unique voices made public speaking seem like something that is accessible to us mere mortals.
I am excited to learn more about a topic that used to scare me. Thanks for writing this!
