The Conundrum of the Decapitated Detective Hugh Kerr Mystery Series Book I The corpse in the morgue had been beheaded, the hands severed and the bottoms of the feet scorched, making identification next to impossible. The man's identity hinges on personal belongings found near the body, and the formality of having his two best friends view the remains and agree with the name on the driving license. Failure to do so would consign the mangled body to a nameless grave; begrudging a positive I.D. would be admitting the detective was really dead. Neither option is acceptable. Not to Hugh Kerr, the criminal lawyer who had risen to fame on his Harvard education, his cunning and his almost magical reputation of pulling rabbits out of hats to save his clients from almost certain conviction. And not to Ellen Thorne, Kerr's private secretary and confidant. The two, having worked as a team in Los Angeles during the first half of the 1950s, reject both options. Rather than accept the obvious, they agree to cling to the belief their friend is alive, to discover his whereabouts, track down the perpetrator who had taken such pains to make it appear the detective had died a horrible death, and to properly identify the victim in the morgue. With some ingenuity and more good fortune they find their kidnapped friend barely alive and help him escape. Fearful their enemy's men have infiltrated the police department, they are unable to ask the authorities for help and go on the lam in an attempt to hide from both the long arm of the law and their adversary's grasp. Finally constructing a plan he hopes will prove their innocence, the Gang returns to Los Angeles and confident in the law, they turn themselves in. After enduring exceptionally insensitive interrogations by professional associates they supposed to be friends, the three are reunited in a hunt that ultimately culminates in the elusive justice Kerr sought, but with dire and unexpected consequences. I really enjoyed this book and I am not your typical avid reader. The whole time I read the story I imagined the movie " LA Confidential" in my head as I read. The character detail is very good and the twists in the story makes you guess how it will end and look forward to seeing if you are right or not? I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series since I now know the main characters and want to see how they develop. I would definitely recommend this book.Product details

The Conundrum of the Decapitated Detective The Hugh Kerr Mystery Series Book I SL Kotar JE Gessler Books Reviews
Full of surprises, twists and turns, plus many unforgettable and quite interesting characters. This book makes for very entertaining reading! I would highly recommend it. Very suspenseful.
I was given this book by a friend who knows i am not one who can sit still to read. Being in the legal field, I was initially drawn to the characters. You begin to know and understand their way of thinking. Mid way through this book, I remember thinking I knew how the story would end. I, of course, was wrong. This got me hooked and I am now on my third book. What I am going to do, is start at the beginning and read them in the order these amazing authors wrote the books. Highly recommend.
I loved this book, and I am already involved reading the second book in the series. Reading this Conundrum book made me rethink why I read. The easy answer that I always use is "I'm too polite to peek into windows." But this book shows it's not the superficial checking a scene I'm interested in, but in the people who populate that scene. I want to know what they feel and why they feel it. I want to feel their pain and their joy as they go through their trials.
Hugh and Ellen and the other characters are real to me. That's why I am glad there are more books in this series. I want more. I feel I would recognize them in an elevator (different time periods ignored). I feel I could count them as friends. I'll let you know if I find the second novel in this series as intriguing, but right now, I love this one.
What I like about The Hugh Kerr Mystery Series....
The series is much more than simply books in a .long line of "episodes", but rather it is a continuing story. We meet the main players, "The Kerr Gang" as they refer to themselves early on in the first book. As the series develops, we come to more and more about the individuals through the course of their daily interactions. Literally seeing the individuals grow together, and thier friendships building. And here is the best part, YOU get to join them along this amazing journey, and possibly grow some along with these new friends you have come to love. Honestly I cannot wait until the next new book is published, but there is great joy in re-reading the earlier books as well!
Hugh Kerr a 1950's criminal lawyer in Los Angles, with an outstanding reputation and a kind heart.
Ellen Thorne is Hugh's private secretary, and good friend.
Jack Merrick, the private detective, and best friend, who works to provide the evidence for Hugh to be victorious in court.
Bartholomew Bond the District Attorney who seems to constantly be "up against" Hugh in court.
and finally Lieutenant Hank Ward and his wife Mary who become closely aligned with Hugh and his gang.
The Conundrum of the Decapitated Detective The Hugh Kerr Mystery Series Book I
I found this work intensely fascinating because of the unique character development and the way the authors paint a scene so that you feel as though you are actually part of these people's lives. The plot is compelling, believable and more importantly, it works with the characters, the times (1955) and the mood that is generated from the first page. In a way I think this captures a sense of reality far better than any book I have read in a long time, and I read a lot. I liked the atmosphere and the complexity and almost the sense of "backstory" that lurks between the lines of dialogue. You know there is so much more to the people that you become familiar with and you want to know their stories and the secrets they keep hidden, even from themselves. Although the book concludes satisfactorily, knowing there are more in the series is a satisfaction because by the time you're done reading it, you want to become part of the continuing world that's woven here.
What makes this book (and the "Conundrum" series) compelling is the complexity of the characters. As you read, they become real people to you and you care about them. Perhaps more importantly, the authors place them in real situations and, as in real life, nothing comes easily. They have to work out their problems, both professionally and personally. Nor do the authors present a "final solution" with clues or facts the reader is not privy to. You live Hugh Kerr, Ellen Thorne and Jack Merrick's lives as they do, sometimes taking a wrong turn, sometimes jumping to wrong conclusions but in the end, which is by no means assured, you are satisfied with how the puzzle works out, with the understanding scars and hurts remain, leaving you eager to know more about them. The authors have captured the tone, the atmosphere, of the 1950s both in complexity and innocence, reminding those who lived through those years how it was and what a different time it was compared to the social temper of decades ago. And if you don't remember the times, you will find yourself catapulted back and drawn into an era that was oddly compelling.
Taut suspenseful reading. Could not put it down!
